About

Overview

Niwa is a working scaffold for a Japanese plant database focused on conditions in and around Tokyo. The visual register is borrowed from McMaster-Carr — dense data, hairline rules, system fonts, restrained colour. Content is placeholder for now: five plants you can use as the shape, with real data dropped in later.

Methodology

Plant data lives as YAML in an Astro content collection, validated by Zod at build time. Adding a plant is a single YAML file — no schema gymnastics. At build the static catalog gets a Pagefind index, and a Workbox service worker pre-caches each plant page for offline use after first visit.

Roadmap

  • Real data, with horticultural review
  • Additional regions (Kanagawa, Saitama, Chiba)
  • Proper photography and habitat maps
  • Decide a permanent name (currently placeholder “Niwa”)
